Although we get caught up in the usual stress of preparing for Christmas Day and hoping it all goes according to plan, I think most of us don't forget why the day is special, not only to those around us but for those less fortunate....

Most of us find ourselves doing something to 'give' to others.

I want to share with you something my brother did every year back in the early 70's. None of the family knew at the time and his wife didn't know until a few years later... It made me so proud of my brother when I finally discovered his Christmas 'secret'

Throughout the year he would (secretly) buy toys and wrap them ready for the big day.

Christmas morning he would disappear...

He dressed as Santa and visited the local hospitals in London giving the children their own special visit from Father Christmas with a special toy of their own. Back then this was quite extraordinary for the children to be visited in this way and particularly doing it anonymously.

I was chatting with him recently, remembering what he had done and told him something he probably didnt realise....

I often wonder how many of those children, away from their families at Christmas, would still remember that special visit from Santa, and I will bet that most of them, now in their 50's, still talk about it and remember what he did for them as they sit enjoying their Christmas dinner.

The REAL Father Christmas visited them.

A brother I am very proud of!

There are so many stories, I would love to hear them whether about someone who made your Christmas special, or whether it was something you were given the opportunity to do to help someone else.

Tracey Caroline Perfitt That was just beautiful, the kindness of strangers has never ceased to amaze me, your brother sounds an amazing person, humble as well as kind and generous ❤️️ my daughter is 25 now but when she was just a tiny tot , her father had promised he'd drop off a Christmas tree for us to decorate , it got to Christmas Eve and I realised the tree wasn't to be, I was pretty upset as well as completely broke , I scratched about under the settees until I found a few pounds and pennies and decided to make a dash to the place I'd seen they'd been selling them . When I got there and saw all the beautiful huge trees and people handing over big bucks for them!!! I asked the old man selling them did he have anything smaller , he showed me the small ones x told me the price!!! About 3 times more than I had, I asked if he had any smaller ones , he said no, I was gutted but smiled and thanked him x wished him a merry Christmas , next thing I knew , he said he had just the tree for us , he told me to swing my car over by the parking area , he brought me over the most beautiful tree and directly started putting it into my estate boot, I'm panicking thinking it's gorgeous x I've got next to nothing in my purse, you guessed it, he told me and megs to have a lovely Christmas x insisted it was his gift 🎁 I'll never forget driving home with megs that night to decorate that tree x I will never forget that lovely old mans kindness and for reading what must have been the sadness in my eyes , things are much better now x a few more pounds in my purse, but no tree will ever be more beautiful x decorated with love than that night I was lucky enough to meet that living angel 😇

Maggie Turrell We have a great community spirit around us, we all do our best for people who are less fortunate than ourselves, There are a few hard working men and women who ask for donations for hampers for the needy people and pensioners, this year we reached over 30 hampers which is great,,, but it gets my back up knowing we shouldnt be living out of food banks and it shouldnt be like that in this day and age, and aimed mostly at the pensioners,,, I have been doing xmas dinner for my neighbour for years even though he spends every penny he has on drugs, he has to eat..xxxx

Lizzy Hideho TaylorGroup Admin That is special Maggie Turrell To 'give' and care without judgement is a quality this world needs more of..

It reminded me of part of a letter written by Sofia, Gonçalo Amaral's wife, when she described how he would join and share his Christmas mea
l with João Cipriano. It was the sacrifice he offered to God in memory of Joana. ('During an incestuous act between the mother and the uncle, the child was beaten, later cut into pieces and her body disposed of, no one knows where. The mother and the uncle were imprisoned, with the trial coordinated by Gonçalo Amaral, and bringing each of them nearly 20 years in prison.')

Inspired by this thread I dedicated one about the letter here:

Lizzy Hideho TaylorGroup Admin That is so lovely Eileen Walton. People react to how they are treated and it seems in this case you treated him with respect and he reciprocated with a similar respect. How thoughtful that you offered him the opportunity of slipping away quietly...and how great for you knowing that you had truly made a difference in his life and appreciated and enjoyed it enough to stay

You gave yourself a memory to last a lifetime and you likely have many more which make you the person you are
